One of the busiest weeks of the schedule began on
Tuesday, as the North Winnipeg Satelites played host to the Lundar Falcons. North Winnipeg broke the scoreless tie just under 12 minutes into the first. Lundar drew even & then took the lead with consecutive power play goals. Before the period ended however, the Satelites had regained the lead, scoring twice, including a shorthanded goal. The second period saw the teams combine for 10 goals – 5 each, with Lundar scoring 3 power play goals and 2 even strength & North Winnipeg scoring 1 on the power play, 1 shorthanded & 3 even strength. After 40 minutes, the Satelites led 8-7 in a wild one. The 3
rd period was a sprint for the finish, as the Falcons tied the game & then took the lead, all within a minute. North Winnipeg fought hard to tie, and did so with under 3 minutes to go, only to see Lundar come back and score 38 seconds later to take the lead & have that be the winning goal.
Landen Gray scored 3 times and added 2 assists to lead the Falcons. Bryce Horning added 2 goals & 2 assists, while Cody Paul chipped in with 4 helpers. Breyden Turner, Trent Laycock & Aldyn Gray all had a goal & 2 assists. Travis Rigden started the game, stopping 15 of 21 shots. He gave way to Randy Quick, who stopped 16 of the 19 shots he faced to earn the win.
The Satelites were led by Jesse McIntosh, who scored 4 goals. Glen Paupanekis scored once and added 2 assists, while both Colin Yarchuk & Bryan MacKenzie added 3 assists. Parker Cassie, Keilan Mott and Sean Murray all finished with 2 points. Trent Sargent faced 41 shots in the game, stopping 31 of them.
Wednesday evening pitted the South Division leading Selkirk Fishermen against the Arborg Ice Dawgs. Arborg jumped out to the quick lead, scoring two goals just 14 seconds apart early in the first. They added one more and held a solid 3-0 lead. The second period saw the Ice Dawgs add to their lead, scoring 3 more times, including once on the power play and hold a commanding 6-0 lead after 2 periods. The 3
rd period had the Fishermen get on the board with 2 goals, but it wasn’t enough, as the Ice Dawgs held on to upset the Fish 6-2.
The Ice Dawgs’ Derric Gulay & Nico Morrow-Litke both scored twice and added an assist to lead them with 3 points. Clint Torfason added a goal and 2 assists himself. Cory Kuldys chipped in with a goal and an assist while Kyle Barkman added 2 assists. Jon Narverud stopped 45 of the 47 shots he faced in the game to earn the win.
Selkirk’s Brayden Kowalchuk dished out 2 assists in the game, while Drayton Mendrun & Scott Thomas both scored single goals. Jordan Liske allowed 6 goals on 37 shots, before giving way to Riley Bannerman, who stopped 11 of 11 shots he faced.
On
Thursday, rivals Fisher River visited Peguis. The Hawks opened the scoring just past the midway point of the first period. From then on, it was all Peguis as they tallied 3 times in the first to hold a 3-1 lead. The second period saw a ridiculous amount of offence, as the Juniors scored 12 times to take a 15-1 lead. Fisher River got one back early in the 3
rd, and another later in the period, but the Juniors poured 5 more goals in to crush the Hawks 20-3.
The Juniors were led by Matthew Cameron, who scored 3 times and added 5 assists. Shaquille Houle also scored a hat trick added 4 assists. Keeven Daniels-Webb, Ian Sutherland & Dylan Stevenson all recorded 5 points, while Devon Garson & Tyler Woodhouse both earned 4 points. Keesin Richard, Christian Cochrane & Romano Paul had 3 points each, while Jesse Flett & Theoren Spence both got 2 points. Keifer Tacan stopped 34 of the 37 shots he faced.
Fisher River got single goals from Josh Bealieu, Johnny Bealieu & Brent Sutherland. Jarrett Hogue & Dakota Johnson both played in the game, facing a combined 68 shots and make 48 saves.
There were 3 games scheduled for
Friday night. The Norway House North Stars headed to Cross Lake to play the Islanders. The young North Stars were in tough as the Islanders scored 6 times in the first period, including 3 power play goals. The second period saw the Islanders add 6 more goals, including a shorthanded marker to go up 12-0. The North Stars got a few goals back, including a power play goal, but saw Cross Lake add 4 more and hold a 16-2 lead. In the 3
rd, Cross Lake added 4 more goals, while Norway House scored once, and the Islanders easily won the game by a 20-3 score.
Braeden Boschman scored 5 times and added 3 assists. Dennis Scatch scored 2 goals and added 4 assists, while Kenley Monias & Tanner Poker both added 2 goals and 3 assists. Austin Ross, Tie Braun, Derian Duncan & Jameson Scott all finished with multiple points. Brendan McLeod made 31 saves in the game for the win.
Jeremy Folster led the North Stars with 2 goals, while Conley Spence added a goal and an assists. Joey Folster faced nearly 100 shots (97) and stopped 77 of them.
In other action
Friday night, the Fisher River Hawks played host to the Selkirk Fishermen. Selkirk opened the scoring, with what was the only goal of the first period, to hold a 1-0 lead. They added one more in the 2
nd period, to be up 2-0 after 40 minutes. The 3
rd period saw the Fish score shorthanded to take a 3-0 advantage. The Hawks cut the lead to 3-1 with a power play goal, but Selkirk added 2 more, 16 seconds apart, including one on the power play to close out the game 5-1.
Jeremy Pachkowsky scored twice to lead the Fishermen. Milan Horanski & Scott Thomas both dished out two assists, while Karl Fey added a goal and an assist. Riley Bannerman was solid in goal, stopping 30 of the 31 shots he faced to earn the win.
Dalton Woodhouse scored the only goal for the Hawks. Jarrett Hogue faced 47 shots in the game, stopping 42 of them.
The final game of the night saw the North Winnipeg Satelites play the St. Malo Warriors. The Warriors scored first in the game and held this lead, until 25 seconds remaining in the period when the Satelites tied the score. The second period saw the Warriors explode for 5 goals, including one shorthanded and hold a commanding 6-1 lead. The Warriors added 2 more goals in the 3
rd, with one of them coming with the man advantage. The game ended with St. Malo cruising to an 8-1 win over their division rivals.
Warriors’ captain Jared Magne scored twice and added an assist for 3 points. Blaise Nordine, Riley Hunter & Bryden Johnson all scored once and added an assist. Brett Keith & Nolan McElroy each dished out two helpers. Noah Fournier made 27 saves in the game to earn the victory.
Colin Yarchuk scored the only goal for the Satelites. Trent Sargent started the game, stopping 20 of 24 shots. Derick Vinsky relieved him in the 2
nd period, and he stopped 23 of 27 shots in the game.
There were just two games scheduled for
Saturday. In the first, the Arborg Ice Dawgs headed to Cross Lake to play the Islanders. Arborg quickly shook of the “bus-legs” and scored 3 times in the first period, including a power play goal and a shorthanded marker as they took a 3-0 lead. They made the score 4-0 just under 2 minutes in the 2
nd period. The Islanders broke the shutout as they scored near the midway point of the period. The Ice Dawgs added 2 more 3
rd period goal, while Cross Lake scored one, as Arborg won the game 6-2.
Both Derric Gulay & Travis Kilbrei scored a goal and an assist each, while Cory Kuldys chipped in with 2 assists. Aaron Kristjanson, Kyle Barkman, Spencer Kilbrei & Nico Morrow-Litke each scored one goal. Jon Narverud faced 63 shots in the game, stopping 61 of them to earn the win.
Austin Ross led the Islanders with 2 assists, while Brandon McKay & Tanner Osborne-Richard each scored single goals. Tory Monias started the game, stopping 19 of the 23 shots he saw. Kris Wood-Ross replaced him in the 2
nd period, and he stopped 29 of 31 shots.
The OCN Storm played host to the Lundar Falcons in the other game. OCN scored right off the opening faceoff, just 4 seconds in the game. Lundar tied the game and then took the lead later in the period, but the Storm scored one back to knot the game back at 2-2. Lundar scored the only goals of the 2
nd period, adding 3 more to their total, including a power play marker to take a 5-2 lead. OCN drew within 2 in the 3
rd, but the Falcons tallied one more power play goal late in the period to double-up the Storm 6-3.
Trent Laycock paced the Falcons with a goal and 3 assists. Cody Paul scored once and added 2 assists, while Bryce Horning & Brandon Worthing both recorded 2 points. Travis Rigden stopped 36 of the 39 shots he faced in the game to earn the win.
Camacho Lathlin scored twice for the Storm. Lodie Ipeelie added 2 assists to his total. Luke Penner made 37 saves on 43 shots in the game.
Sunday’s schedule saw 3 games on the list. Arborg continued their northern road trip with a stop in Norway House. The game remained scoreless in the first until Arborg found the mark with 5:30 to go. From that point on, the Ice Dawgs tallied 3 more times, while the North Stars countered with one of their own to make the score 4-1. The second period saw the Ice Dawgs score early, on the power play to go up 5-1. Norway House kept pressing, adding 3 of their own to draw to within one goal at 5-4. Arborg got a power play goal and even strength goal back to take 7-4 lead into the final period. Neither team could score in the 3
rd, and the Ice Dawgs closed out the game by a 7-4 margin.
The Ice Dawgs were led on the score sheet by Travis Kilbrei, Cal Finnson & Ryan Pochailo, who all scored once and added 2 assists. Cory Kuldys also recorded 2 helpers in the game. Travis Schalk turned aside 35 shots in earning the win.
Antoni Grieves scored twice and added an assist, while Marshall Mowatt scored a goal and added 2 assists for the North Stars. Joey Folster stopped 45 shots out of the 52 he faced in the Norway House goal.
OCN was looking to rebound into the win column as they played host to the Fisher River Hawks. The Storm certainly found their offence in the first period, scoring 8 times to hold a commanding 8-0 lead. Fisher River got back into the game, scoring 3 straight in the second, and 4 total, while OCN added two of their own (just 9 seconds apart), to leave the score at 10-4. The 3
rd period saw more goals from both teams, as Fisher River added 2 to their total, while the Storm scored 5 times, making this one a final 15-6 for OCN.
Lodie Ipeelie continued his torrid pace, scoring 3 times and adding 5 assists for 8 points. Camacho Lathlin scored 3 times and added 3 assists, while Mitchell Tilley scored twice and recorded 3 assists. Nathan Gardner added 2 goals & 2 assists. Edward Lachose & Devon Tobacco both recorded 3 points in the game. Tyrel Buechert scored twice. Luke Penner turned aside 31 of the 37 shots he saw, earning the win.
Darryl Thaddeus led the Hawks with 2 goals and 4 assists. Dalton Woodhouse added a goal and 4 assists. Tyler Kemball scored twice & Dominic Laquette added 2 assists. Quinn Munroe started the game, allowing 6 goals on 20 shots in the first period. Jarrett Hogue replaced him, and stopped 20 of the 29 shots he faced.
The final game of the weekend pitted the St. Malo Warriors against the Selkirk Fishermen in Selkirk. This was expected to be a close checking game and it didn’t disappoint. The Warriors scored the only goal of the 1
st period, with just 22 seconds to go to hold a 1-0 lead. The 2
nd period saw St. Malo grab a 2-0 lead just over 3:30 in. Selkirk cut the deficit to 1 with a power play goal, but the Warriors regained their 2 goal cushion later in the period. Before the second was over however, the Fish scored one more and the game went to the 3
rd with the Warriors leading 3-2. Selkirk scored the only goal of the 3
rd period to tie the game & send it to overtime. With the clock ticking down in overtime, and looking like the game would head to a shootout, the Fishermen scored a power play goal to grab the extra point for the win.
The Fishermen got 2 goals and an assist from Jeremy Pachkowksy, along with a goal and an assist from Talon Kelly. Nigel Hoydalo & Karl Fey both added 2 assists each. Jordan Liske faced 45 shots in the game, stopping 42 of them to earn the win.
S.t Malo got single goals from Dustin Wiebe, Robert Guimond & Jordy Hill. Jordan Taylor stopped 39 shots in the game to the Warriors a single point.
The final week of action in January begins this week with a game on
Tuesday night between the Arborg Ice Dawgs & the North Winnipeg Satelites.
Wednesday sees the Fishermen head to Lundar to play the Falcons.
Friday night has OCN in Lundar and Cross Lake in St. Malo. With three games scheduled for
Saturday, we’ll see OCN play in Selkirk, Arborg in St. Malo and Cross Lake close out the weekend in Winnipeg against the Satelites. There are no games scheduled
Sunday.
