Action in the first full week of play of 2016 began on Tuesday with the Peguis Juniors playing the North Winnipeg Satelites.
Peguis started fast, scoring just 34 seconds into the game.  They added another goal later in the period and held a 2-0 lead.  Peguis fired off 3 goals in the second, all within a 2:31 span and held a commanding 5-0 lead after 40 minutes.  North Winnipeg got on the board in the 3rd, only to see Peguis answer right back.  The Satelites added 2 power play goals to cut the lead in half, however the Juniors added a shorthanded goal and closed the game out 7-3.
Theoren Spence led the Juniors with a hat trick and an assist.  Dylan Stevenson added 2 goals and an assist & Donovan Tanner contributed 3 assists.  Joseph Sutherland, Montana Tanner and Shaquille Houle all finished with 2 points.  Keifer Tacan stopped 32 of the 35 shots he faced to earn the win.
Jesse McIntosh scored twice for the Satelites.  Colin Yarchuk added 2 assists.  Marc Hildebrand started the game and made 17 saves on 21 shots.  Derick Vinsky replaced him, stopping 19 of the 22 shots he faced.
 
Thursday night saw OCN head to Cross Lake to play the Islanders in a North Division match up.  The Storm opened the scoring on the power play, then added 3 more goals in the first, including another power play marker.  The second period saw OCN add 4 more goals to their total, including one more on the power play and a penalty shot goal, to hold an 8-0 lead after 2 periods.  Cross Lake broke the shutout bid 30 seconds into the 3rd with a power play goal, only to see the Storm score two of their own on the power play and crush the Islanders 10-1.
Lodie Ipeelie scored a hat trick and added 3 assists for OCN.  Mitchell Tilley also scored a hat trick and added 2 assists.  Both Sam McKay Jr and Tyrel Buechert chipped in with 3 points, while Brandon Sinclair-Martin & Brody Personius recorded 2 assist a piece.  Luke Penner stopped 47 of the 48 shots he saw in the game to earn the win.
Austin Ross scored the lone goal for Cross Lake.  Brendan McLeod started the game, and surrendered 4 goals on 19 shots.  Kris Wood-Ross relieved him to start the 2nd, and gave up 6 goals over 40 shots.
 
Only one KJHL game was on the schedule for Friday night, as the St. Malo Warriors played host to the Lundar Falcons.  Lundar scored the only goal of the first period to go up 1-0.  They increased their lead to 2-0 a little over 6 minutes into the 2nd.  St. Malo cut the lead to 2-1, but less than a minute later, the Falcons scored again to go up by 2 goals.  The 3rd period stayed that way, until St. Malo made it 3-2 on a power play goal.  With the Warriors’ goalie on the bench, the Falcons scored two empty net goals to close the game out 5-2 and steal two big points.
Bryce Horning led the Falcons with a hat trick.  Breyden Turner & Jory Ross both dished out two assists.  Travis Rigden turned aside 36 shots in the game to earn the victory.
Mark Nelson & Jared Magne scored single goals for the Warriors.  Jordan Taylor made 24 saves on 27 shots in the game.
 
Saturday had a busy schedule, with 6 teams in action.  Cross Lake headed to Norway House to continue their rivalry.  The Islanders scored the only goal of the first period, a shorthanded marker.  In the 2nd, Cross Lake scored 4 more goals to go up 5-0, before Norway House got on the board late in the period.  With the score 5-1 Islanders to start the 3rd, Cross Lake added 4 more goals to cruise to a 9-1 win.
Cross Lake was led by Braeden Boschman with 2 goals and 2 assists.  Austin Ross scored twice and added an assist, while Dennis Scatch dished out 3 assists.  Quinton Scatch, Cody Spence & Josh Mallett all recorded 2 points.  Brendan McLeod made 26 saves on 27 shots as he earned the win.
Norway House’s Jeremy Folster scored his team’s lone goal.  Jarred Gore started the game, allowing 5 goals on 24 shots.  He was replaced in the 2nd period by Joey Folster, who allowed 4 goals on 21 shots.
 
In other action, the Fisher River Hawks hooked up with the Peguis Juniors.  Peguis got on the board first in the game, and then added 2 more goals in the period to hold a 3-0 advantage.  Fisher River narrowed the lead to 3-1 early in the 2nd, only to see the Juniors score 3 more times, including a shorthanded goal to be up 6-1 after 40 minutes.  The Hawks scored at the midway point of the 3rd to make it 6-2, however over the course of the final 10 minutes, Peguis added 4 more goals, including 2 on the power play, while Fisher River chipped in with 2 more of their own.  The game ended with an 11-4 win for Peguis.
Romano Paul scored twice and dished out 3 assists to record 5 point for Peguis.  Jesse Flett and Tyler Woodhouse both scored twice and added an assist.  Keesin Richard, Christian Cochrane, Denis Stevenson, Waylon Neault, Devon Garson, and Shaquille Houle all recorded two points in the game.  Keifer Tacan turned aside 20 of the 24 shots he faced.
Evan Thickfoot scored once and added 2 assists to lead the Hawks.  Darryl Thaddeus contributed a goal and an assist in the game.  Jarrett Hogue stopped 31 of the 42 shots in the game.
 
The final game of Saturday night saw the Arborg Ice Dawgs head to OCN to lock up with the Storm.  OCN scored the only goal of the first period to take a 1-0 lead.  The Storm added 3 more in the 2nd, including a shorthanded goal to go up 4-0.  They made it 5-0 early in the 3rdon the power play.  Both teams scored twice over the final 14 minutes of the game, including OCN adding another power play, as the Storm closed out the game 7-2.
Camacho Lathlin scored 4 times and added an assist for OCN.  Brody Personius chipped in with a goal and 3 assists, while Bryson Constant added 3 assists.  Justice Genaille found the net twice and added an assist.  Luke Penner stopped 32 of the 34 shots he faced to earn the win.
Arborg was led by Travis Kilbrei & Colton Davies who both scored once and added an assist.  Travis Schalk stopped 25 of the 32 shots he faced in the game.
 
There were just two games scheduled for Sunday.  Lundar was looking to continue their winning streak as they headed to Selkirk to play the Fishermen.  The Fishermen opened the scoring in the first, just over 3 minutes in.  The lead evaporated quickly, as the Falcons knotted the game back up just 37 seconds later.  The Fish added another goal to the their total and held a 2-1 first period lead.  Selkirk increased their lead to 3-1 in the second, scoring the only goal of the period, on the power play.   The Falcons made the score 3-2 in the 3rd.  The Lundar goal empty and the Falcons pressing, the Fishermen scored an insurance marker into the empty net to claim the 4-2 win.
Selkirk was led by Drayton Mendrun with two goals.  Milan Horanski & Karl Fey both scored single goals.  Jordan Liske stopped 36 of the 38 shots sent his way to earn the win.
Evan Loeb scored once and added 1 assist to pace the Falcons.  Drake Zimmerman scored the other Falcons’ goal.  Randy Quick made 31 saves on 34 shots in the game.
 
The final game of the week saw the Peguis Juniors head to OCN to play the Storm in a battle for first place in the North Division.  Peguis took an early lead in the game, only to have OCN tie the game up.  Before the first was over though, the Juniors grabbed a 2-1 lead.  The second period saw the Juniors increase their lead, scoring 3 times in the period, including a power play goal.  The Storm got 2 back, including one on the power play, and the game went to the 3rd period with Peguis up 5-3.  OCN made it a one goal game, scoring just past the midway point of the period.  Peguis scored 3 times in the final 3 minutes of the game though, including once on the power play to ice the game by an 8-4 score.
The Juniors were led by Romano Paul, who scored a hat trick and added an assist.  Waylon Neault, Devon Garson & Keeven Daniels-Webb both scored a goal and added an assist.  Montana Tanner also dished out 2 assists.  Connor Shaw shopped 38 of the 42 shots sent his way to earn the win.
Camacho Lathlin scored twice and added an assist and Drew Morin scored once and added 2 assists to lead the OCN Storm.  Lodie Ipeelie contributed 2 assists in the game.  Luke Penner made 29 saves on 37 shots in the game.
 
With only a month to go in the regular season, the race for playoff positioning is heating up.  Action begins Tuesday night, in a battle for first overall in the South Division as the St. Malo Warriors visited the Selkirk Fishermen.  Wednesday night saw the North Winnipeg Satelites head to Fisher River to play the Hawks.  Friday evening had 3 games on the schedule as Fisher River played host to Norway House, St. Malo headed to Lundar & Cross Lake made a stop in Peguis.  Saturday sees 8 of the 10 teams in action: Arborg is in St. Malo, OCN heads to Winnipeg to play the Satelites, Cross Lake stops in Lundar and Norway House plays Peguis. Sunday closes the week with 3 more games as the North Stars complete their 3 game road trip back in Peguis, Selkirk heads to Arborg and OCN plays Fisher River.
