Week 18 Wrap Up

And so, the final week of play in the KJHL regular season began this week, as teams battled hard to gain the final points and solidify their playoff position.
 
Action kicked off on Tuesday with two games.  St. Malo made a stop at Mosienko Arena to play the North Winnipeg Satelites.  St. Malo jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the first 1:06 of the game.  North Winnipeg took awhile to get going, but then answered with 4 goals of their own, to hold a 4-2 first period lead.  The second period saw more Satelites’ offence, as they poured in 3 more goals and were up 7-2, before St. Malo tacked on one of their own.  North Winnipeg rounded out the scoring with 2 more goals in the 3^rd, and closed out the game with a 9-3 win.
Kyle Collins led the Satelites with a hat trick, while Derek Ramage scored twice & added an assist.  Kyle Grand chipped in with a goal & 2 assists.  Keilan Mott recorded a goal and an assist.  Marc Hildebrand made 31 saves on 34 shots for the Satelites to take the win.
St. Malo got single goals from Tyler Kemball, Triston Eastman & Jared Magne.  Jordan Taylor made 21 saves on 28 shots, giving way to Tanner Friesen, who entered the game in the 2^ndperiod, and made 15 saves on 17 shots.
 
Also Tuesday, OCN played Arborg in a game rescheduled from the weekend.  Arborg opened the scoring, 4 minutes into the first, and that goal stood up as the lone one of the period.  The Ice Dawgs added to their lead in the second, scoring early in the period, and took a 2-0 lead into the 3^rd.  OCN found their touch, and scored 3 times in the period, to take a 3-2 lead.  However, it was the Ice Dawgs with some late heroics, and they tied the game to force OT, and earn an important point.  The overtime period settled nothing, and the game went to a shootout.  The Storm scored the lone goal of the shootout, and earned the extra point.
OCN got 2 goals from Brody Personius, while Tanner Koroscil dished in 2 asissts.  Drew Morin scored a lone goal & Maxwell Shoo scored the shootout winner.  Luke Penner made 31 saves on 34 shots in the game to record the win.
Arborg got a goal and an assist from Cory Kuldys.  Talon Kelly & Carter Comeau scored single goals.  Jon Narverud turned aside 35 of the 38 shots he faced in the game.
 
Wednesday night pitted the North Winnipeg Satelites against the Peguis Juniors.  Peguis scored the only two goals of the first period, and held a 2-0 lead.  The Satelites cut the lead in the half in the first minute of the second and added another later in the period.  Peguis also scored twice in the 2^nd, and held a 4-2 lead heading to the 3^rdperiod.  North Winnipeg scored twice in the period, nearing the midway point to tie the game, but couldn’t keep the score that way, as Peguis tallied 4 times before the 3^rdwas over and doubled up the Satelites for an 8-4 win.
Tyler McKay led the Juniors’ offence with 3 goals, while Presley Kirkness added 2 goals and an assist.  Jesse Flett scored once and tacked on an assist.  Both Romano Paul & Dylan Stevenson added 2 assists.  Keifer Tacan made 49 saves in the game to record the victory.
Dylan Wittinger scored twice & Beau Zelenewich tallied 3 assists for the Satelites.  Howard Grieves & Vinny Carriere both scored single goals.  Marc Hildebrand made 47 saves on 55 shots in the game.
 
The next KJHL action took place Friday, as the St. Malo Warriors played host to the Lundar Falcons.  The Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, before Lundar answered with a goal of their own, to make the game 3-1 after one.  Lundar scored the lone goal of the second period, and the Warriors were clinging to a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.  St. Malo added some breathing room in the first minute of the 3^rd, but Lundar battled back to make the game 4-3.  The Warriors added an insurance marker into an empty goal to take the 5-3 win.
Justin Collette led the Warriors with 4 assists, while Bryden Johnson scored twice & Jessi Freund added a goal and an assist.  Tanner Friesen made 23 saves on 26 shots for the win.
Craig Caine scored twice for the Falcons, while Troy Kaartinen added a single goal.  Andrew Smith made 29 saves on 33 shots in the Falcons’ goal.
 
Saturday night originally had 3 games on the schedule, however the Fisher River Hawks were unable to ice a team, and were forced to forfeit both of their games on the weekend in OCN.
 
The North Winnipeg Satelites were in Selkirk to play the Fishermen.  Selkirk scored the game’s opening goal, and then added another in the final minute & half, only to have the Satelites answer back to leave the game at 2-1.  The second period saw the Fishermen score the lone goal, and hold a 3-1 lead.  The 3^rdwas all Selkirk, as they tacked on 4 straight goals, and held a 7-1 lead before the Satelites scored at the midway point.  Selkirk then added 3 more goals over the final 10 minutes, while North Winnipeg scored once more as the Fishermen cruised to a 10-3 win.
Tanner MacVicar scored 3 times and added 2 assists.  Brandon Paradoski recorded 4 assists in the game, while Sean Loutit added 3 goals.  Michael Smiley & Griffin Steeves scored once and added an assist.  Scott Thomas, Tyndall Fontaine & Dylan Painchaud-Niemi all added 2 assists.  Jordan Liske stopped 34 of the 37 shots he faced to record the win.
Kyle Collins was in on all 3 Satelites’ goals.  Mathew Carrey recorded a goal and an assist.  Keaton Klassen stopped 20 shots in the game.
 
Peguis closed out the regular season in Norway House in the first of their weekend matchup.  The North Stars opened up a 2-0 lead on Peguis, but the Juniors’ answered with a goal of their own before the period was over.  The second period saw Peguis score 4 straight goals to hold a 5-2 lead, and then both teams traded goals in the final 2 minutes of the period, which left Peguis with a 6-3 lead.  The 3 saw the North Stars storm back and tie the game with 3 goals, but in the final 4 minutes of the game, Peguis added 2 goals to their total, and won the game 8-6.
Waylon Neault scored 3 goals and added 2 assists to lead the Juniors.  Tyler Woodhouse, Jesse Flett, Darryl Flett & Theoren Spence all put up 3 points in the game.  Keifer Tacan made 28 saves in the game on 34 shots for the win.
Glen Paupanekis scored twice for the North Stars, while Trevor Scribe & Ronald Robertson both scored once and added an assist.  Donovan McKay dished out 2 assists.  Sean Bradburn made 44 saves on the 52 shots he faced.
 
Sunday’s schedule also saw 2 games.  The Peguis Juniors played the second of their weekend battle against the North Stars.  Norway House scored 4 times in the first period, including 3 in the first 3 minutes, while Peguis answered with a single goal of their own.  The second period saw the North Stars tack 4 more goals onto their total, while Peguis mustered 2 goals, leaving the North Stars with a commanding 8-3 lead.  There was more offence in the 3^rdperiod, where the Juniors scored 3 straight goals and were on the comeback trail, before Norway House increased their lead to 9-6.  The Juniors scored 2 more, before Norway House added 3 to their total, to take the game 12-8.
Sam McKay Jr led the North Stars with 3 goals and 3 assists.  Austin Ross & Glen Paupanekis both scored twice & added an assist, while Brendan Hart recorded 3 assists & Ronald Robertson scored a single goal and chipped in with 2 assists.  Trevor Scribe, Kenley Monias & Brendon Paupanekis all earned 2 points.  Sean Bradburn was solid again, making 47 saves on the 55 shots he faced.
Waylon Neault & Jesse Flett both scored single goals & added 3 assists in the game.  Dylan Stevenson scored twice, while Theoren Spence added 3 goals.  Darryl Flett & Tyler Woodhouse both recorded 3 points.  Jarrod Smith made 27 saves in the game, while Keifer Tacan made 6.
 
The final game of the regular season schedule saw the Arborg Ice Dawgs roll into Selkirk to play the Fishermen.  Arborg held a 2-0 first period, including a powerplay marker.  The Ice Dawgs added 2 more goals in the second period, and held a commanding 4-0 lead after 40 minutes.  Selkirk cut the lead to 4-2 with 2 goals in the 3^rd, but the Ice Dawgs knocked off the Fishermen with a 4-2 final score.
Cody Gibson & Travis Kilbrei led the Ice Dawgs with a goal and an assist each.  Ryan Pochailo & Rylan Veitch both scored single goals.  Jon Narverud turned aside 29 of the 31 shots he faced for the win.
Cory Balcaen scored once and added an assist, while Karl Fey added a single goal.  Bretton Fewchuk made 24 saves in the game.
 
 
That concluded the 2014-15 KJHL regular season.  Congratulations to the Selkirk Fishermen, who claimed the KJHL regular season banner!
