Week 16 Wrap Up

Week 16 Wrap Up

S.Heather

The final week of January games was supposed to have started on Wednesday evening, however the game between the Fisher River Hawks and North Winnipeg Satelites was postponed due to poor weather & travel conditions.

Thursday evening saw the Norway House North Stars drop into OCN for a match up with the Storm.  The North Stars were looking to continue their winning streak and improve their playoff positioning, while the Storm were looking to right the ship and get back into the win column.  Things didn’t go as planned for OCN, as they surrendered a goal in the first minute, and then 3 more later in the first.  OCN did answer with one goal late in the period, but the North Stars held a 4-1 first period lead.  The second period saw the North Stars pour on the offence, as they potted 4 unanswered goals, and held an 8-1 lead after 40 minutes.  OCN battled back in the 3rd, scoring twice, before giving up a 9th Norway House goal.  The Storm scored late in the third, but it was simply too little, too late, and the North Stars won their third straight game, by a 9-4 margin.

Braeden Boschman led the North Stars with 4 goals, while Kenley Monias scored 3 goals of his own & added an assist.  Austin Ross scored twice, while Sam McKay Jr, Glen Paupanekis, Jameson Scott & Preston Wesley all added 2 assists.  Brendan McLeod was solid in goal, turning aside 43 of the 47 shots he faced for the win.

Both Justince Genaille & Dustin Dorion scored goals and added assists to pace the Storm.  Tinoshi Mizushima tallied 2 assists.  Troy Monias started the game, allowing 6 goals on 23 shots.  He was replaced by Luke Penner, who made 20 saves on 23 shots in relief.

Friday night saw several teams in action, starting with the Norway House, who paid a visit to Peguis to lock horns with the Juniors in a rescheduled game from earlier in the season.  Peguis jumped out to a 3-0 first period, scoring all three goals in a span of 2:14.  They scored 6 more second period goals, and held a 9-0 lead after 40 minutes.  Peguis made is 11-0 before the midway point of the 3rd, when finally Norway House found the net, scoring twice.  Peguis added 2 more goals to their total, and were in full control at 13-2.  The North Stars rounded out the scoring in the game, with 2 more goals, but this one was already over, with the Juniors claiming a 13-4 win.

Tyler McKay led the Juniors with 2 goals & 3 assists, while Presley Kirkness added 2 goals & 2 assists of his own.  Darryl Flett & Brennan Cochrane both scored twice & added an assist for 3 points, Dennis Stevenson recorded 3 assists.  Tyler Woodhouse, Harold Linklater, Waylon Neault, Romano Paul, and Devon Garson all finished with 2 points.  Keifer Tacan played the first 40 minutes of the game, making 23 saves and taking the win.  He gave way to Jarrod Smith, who played the final 20 minutes, making 8 saves on 12 shots.

Austin Ross & Alfred Anderson both recorded 2 assists in the game, while Braeden Boschman scored twice to lead the North Stars.  Brendan McLeod made 35 saves on 48 shots in the game.

Fisher River was in St. Malo to battle the Warriors.  St. Malo got out to a 3-0 first period lead for the home crowd and dominating the shot count by a 17-5 margin.  The Warriors increased their lead to 4-0 in the second, however the Hawks broke the shutout bid shortly after, and the second period ended 4-1.  The 3rd period saw the Warriors score 4 unanswered goals, and cruise to a 8-1 win.

St. Malo was led by Bryden Johnson with 3 goals and an assist.  Jeff Froese and Brett Keith both recorded 3 assists in the game.  Jeff Williams & Jared Magne each chipped in with a goal and an assist.  Tanner Friesen made 18 saves on 19 shots to record the victory.

Fisher River’s lone goal was scored by Jordan Sutherland.  Jarrett Hogue made 38 saves in the Hawks’ goal.

Selkirk was across the Interlake to play the Lundar Falcons.  The Fishermen got on the scoreboard first, nearing the midway point of the period.  Lundar answered back just 1:30 later, but the Fish added a late powerplay goal, and held a 2-1 first period lead.  The second period was scoreless until 1:04 remaining when Lundar tied the game.  The third period saw the Fishermen tally 3 times to take a lead they wouldn’t surrender, and win the game 5-2.

The Fishermen were led by Cale McBride with a goal and an assist, and Milan Horanski and Griffin Steeves, who both recorded 2 assists.  Conner Spratt, Cory Balcaen, Tanner MacVicar & Drayton Mendrun each scored once.  Jordan Liske made 25 saves on 27 shots for the win.

Aldyn Gray scored both Lundar goals, with assists to Landen Gray.  Andrew Smith made 30 saves on 35 shots in the game.

Saturday was a heavy night of KJHL action with 8 of the 9 teams playing.

St. Malo was looking to continue their winning streak, as they played the league leading Selkirk Fishermen.  Selkirk struck first in the game and then scored a second, before St. Malo responded.  The Fishermen tacked on 3 more goals in the first 7 minutes of the 2nd and held a 5-1 lead.  The Warriors scored twice, and drew within 2 as the period ended in a 5-3 Fish lead.  The 3rd period was all Selkirk, as they tacked on 4 more goals, and cruised to a 9-3 thumping of the Warriors.

Tanner MacVicar scored once and added 3 assists to lead the Fishermen.  Karl Fey added 2 goals and an assist, while Dylan Painchaud-Niemi recorded a goal and 2 assists.  Cale McBride tallied 3 helpers in the game.  Griffin Steeves scored twice, and Cory Balcaen added a goal and an assist.  Bretton Fewchuk made 21 saves on 24 shots in the game to take the win.

Brett Keith & Jared Magne both scored once and added an assist for the Warriors.  Bryden Johnson recorded 2 assists in the game.  Jordan Taylor started the game, and made 9 saves on 14 shots, giving way to Tanner Friesen, who made 9 saves on 13 shots.

Lundar made a stop in Arborg to play the Ice Dawgs.  Arborg opened the scoring almost 4 minutes into the first.  Lundar countered with a goal nearly 5 minutes later, only to have the Ice Dawgs score on the powerplay and take a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.  The second period saw some back and forth action, but all remained even with no scoring.  The 3rd period had the Ice Dawgs score 52 seconds in.  But it was the Falcons who answered with a powerplay marker to draw back within one.  The Ice Dawgs tallied two more times in the period and held on for a 5-2 win.

Travis Kilbrei scored 3 times and added an assist, Cory Kuldys recorded 4 assists and Talon Kelly scored once and added 3 assists in the game to lead the Ice Dawgs.  Trent Kroeker recorded 2 assists in the game.  Travis Schalk was solid in goal, turning aside 47 of the 49 Falcons’ shots he faced and recording the win.

Breyden Turner & Nico Lisi recorded the Falcons’ goals.  Randy Quick made 31 saves in the goal for Lundar.

Norway House was playing their third road game in 3 days, as they visited Fisher River for a game that had been rescheduled from November.  The North Stars showed no signs of fatigue in this one, scoring 4 times in the first, including a shorthanded goal.  Fisher River responded with 2 goals of their own early in the second to cut the lead in half.  The North Stars then tacked on 2 more of their own, opening up a 6-2 lead.  Again, the Hawks responded, this time with 3 goals.  Norway House added 3 more before the period closed out, and after a goal-filled period settled, the score was 9-5 Norway House.  Not surprisingly, there were 5 more goals in the 3rd period, with the Hawks adding one more, before Norway House tacked on 4 more to their total.  When the dust had settled on this one, the final score was 13-6 Norway House.

The North Stars were led by Austin Ross who scored 4 goals and added 2 assists and Jameson Scott who scored once and had 5 assists.  Braeden Boschman tacked on 2 goals and 2 assists.  Kenley Monias, Sam McKay Jr, Glen Paupanekis, Preston Wesley & Harley Muminawatum all recorded 2 points.  Brendan McLeod made 30 saves on 36 shots in the game.

Darryl Thaddeus recorded a hat trick in the game, and an assist to lead the Hawks.  Jayden Catcheway & Tristin Starr both scored once and added 2 assists.  Jarrett Hogue made 58 saves on 71 shots in the game.

The last game of Saturday night was a weekend matchup between the Peguis Juniors and OCN Storm, which had been rescheduled from earlier in the season.  OCN opened the scoring with a shorthanded marker, only to have Peguis tie the game not long after, and head to the dressing room 1-1 after 20 minutes.  Peguis scored the lone goal of the 2nd period, and held a 2-1 lead.  OCN scored the first 3 goals of the 3rd period, including 2 more shorthanded and held a 4-2 advantage with just under 8 minutes to go.  The Juniors dug deep and scored 4 times over the final 5:21 to steal the victory from OCN.

The Juniors were led by Darryl Flett, who scored a hat trick and added 1 assist.  Presley Kirkenss scored once and added 2 assists.  Dennis Stevenson tacked on 2 assists, while Waylon Neault added a goal and an assist.  Keifer Tacan made 39 saves on 43 shots to take the win.

OCN got 2 goals from both Maxwell Shoo & Tanner Koroscil.  Luke Penner turned aside 19 of the 25 shots he faced in the game.

The lone game of Superbowl Sunday was the second game between the Peguis Juniors and OCN Storm.  Peguis jumped out to a 2-0 lead in this one, only to have the Storm battle back and tie the game before the first was over.  The second period saw OCN break the tie, only to have Peguis answer back.  Before the buzzer sounded, the Storm added one more goal, and held a slim 4-3 lead.  The 3rd period had the Storm score in the first minute, and then again with 20 seconds to go, and break their losing skid, and skate away with a series split and a 6-3 win.

Tanner Koroscil paced the Storm with a goal and 2 assists, while Mitchell Tilley added 3 assists.  Brandon Sinclair-Martin & Maxwell Shoo both scored twice.  Troy Monias turned aside 18 of the 21 shots he faced in the game for the win.

Waylon Neault scored twice in the game for the Juniors.  Keifer Tacan made 45 saves in the Peguis goal.

There are now just 2 weeks of play left in the KJHL regular season schedule.  Teams continue to vie for playoff position, and very little has been sorted out, as positions 1-7 could still change.  This week’s action starts on Tuesday with the Fisher River Hawks playing rival Peguis Juniors, and an important match-up between the Arborg Ice Dawgs and North Winnipeg Satelites at Mosienko Arena.  Thursday night will pit the Satelites in Fisher River to play the Hawks (rescheduled from January 28th) and the Peguis Juniors on the road in St. Malo to play the Warriors.  Friday evening has just one game, between the Arborg Ice Dawgs and the Lundar Falcons.  Saturday evening will see 6 teams in action, as the Peguis Juniors play an important game and one that could ultimately decide the league champion, against the Selkirk Fishermen.  The Norway House North Stars are on the road, as they play the Fisher River Hawks, and the OCN Storm roll into Lundar to play the Falcons.  Sunday will see the North Stars play in St. Malo, while the Storm will play the Ice Dawgs in Arborg, and the weekend action will conclude as the Hawks play the Fishermen in Selkirk.

Be sure to check out the action this week, as the race to the playoffs heats up.
