KJHL action began on Tuesday night as the Peguis Juniors and the North Winnipeg locked up at Mosienko Arena.  North Winnipeg scored twice in the first five minutes of the game to take a 2 goal lead.  Peguis got one back, only to give up one more to the Satelites, who had a 3-1 lead at the end of the first.  Peguis tied the game back up in the 2nd, only to surrender three straight goals and find themselves in a 6-3 deficit after 40 minutes.  The Satelites added to their lead in the 3rd, with 3 more goals.  The Juniors got one back in the final minute, but that was all they could muster, making this one a 9-4 Satelites final.

The Satelites were led by Kyle Collins & Mathew Carrey with 2 goals and an assist each.  Sean Murray added 3 assists.  Kyle Grand scored twice, while Howard Grieves, Kevin Haines & Jason Campbell all added 2 assists.  Scott Douglas also chipped in with a goal and an assist.  Marc Hildebrand made 31 saves on 35 shots to record the win.

Tyrell Armstrong led the Juniors with 2 goals, while Darryl Flett added 2 assists.  Presley Kirkness scored once and added an assist.  Keifer Tacan started the game, making 20 saves on 26 shots.  He was replaced late in the 2nd period by Jarrod Smith, who surrendered 3 goals on 14 shots.

 

Wednesday had two games on the schedule.  The Lundar Falcons visited Fisher River to play the Hawks.  Lundar jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead.  The second saw the Hawks cut the lead to 2-1 with a powerplay goal.  The finale frame saw the Falcons’ add two more goals to their total, including a powerplay marker of their own and go on to win 4-1.

The Falcons’ were led by Storm Swan & Breyden Turner with a goal and an assist each.  Landen Gray & Nico Lisi added single goals.  Andrew Smith made 23 saves on 24 shots to record the win.

Fisher River’s lone goal was scored by Jared Thickfoot.  Jarrett Hogue made 48 saves on 52 shots in the game.

 

In other action Wednesday night, the Selkirk Fishermen and Arborg Ice Dawgs were battling for first place.  Selkirk scored the lone first period goal, a shorthanded effort in the dying minutes of the period.  Quickly in the second, they added 2 more goals to their total and held a 3-0 advantage.  Arborg answered with a goal of their own, only to give up 2 more to Selkirk, who held a 5-1 lead after 2 periods.  There was no scoring in the 3rd and the Fishermen took the win.

Jeremy Pachkowsky led the Fishermen with 2 goals and an assist, while Griffin Steeves added a goal and an assist.  Scott Thomas & Drayton Mendrun scored single goals.  Jordan Liske made 37 saves on the 38 shots he faced to record the win.

Arborg’s only goal was scored by Jesse Chupka.  Jon Narverud made 34 saves in the game.

 

Friday evening saw the OCN Storm play the Peguis Juniors in what became a race to 10 goals.  Peguis jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead.  They increased that to 5-0 early in the 2nd period.  OCN finally got on the board with a shorthanded marker.  Peguis replied back to make it 6-1 and look to be in full control.  The Storm kept coming though, and by the time the dust settled in the 2nd period, there had been 8 goals scored, and the game score was 8-3 Peguis.  The 3rd period was a wild affair, as OCN scored 5 straight goals to tie the game at 8 apiece.  It was Peguis though, who scored twice in the final 7 minutes, including a powerplay marker as insurance, as they outlasted OCN for a 10-8 win.

Peguis was led by Presley Kirkness with 2 goals and 3 assists and Tyler Woodhouse with a goal and 4 assists.  Darryl Flett added a goal and 3 assists, while Waylon Neault scored a hat trick and added an assists.  Denis Baptiste chipped in with 4 helpers.  Jarrod Smith made 37 saves in the game on the 45 shots he faced to claim the win.

Tinoshi Mizushima scored twice and added 2 assists for the Storm.  Mitchell Tilley also scored a hat trick, while Justice Genaille added a goal and 2 assists.  Drake Lathlin & Tanner Koroscil each scored once and added an assist.  Luke Penner stopped 40 of the 50 shots he faced.

 

In other action on Friday, the St. Malo Warriors visit Arborg to play the Ice Dawgs.  St. Malo opened the scoring in the 1st, only to have Arborg answer back with a powerplay goal to tie.  The Ice Dawgs added the lone goal of the 2nd period and held a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.  St. Malo tied the game early in the 3rd, with a shorthanded goal.  Arborg then scored 3 unanswered goals to hold on for the 5-2 win.

Colton Davies led the Ice Dawgs with 2 goals, while Travis Kilbrei scored once and added an assist.  Clint Torfason and Cory Kuldys both scored single goals.  Jon Narverud made 46 saves on 48 shots for the win.

Bobby High & Jeff Froese both scored single goals for the Warriors.  Tanner Friesen made 43 saves on the 38 shots he faced in the game.

 

Saturday night’s schedule saw the OCN Storm play the second game of their road trip against the Lundar Falcons.  OCN got the scoring going late in the first, only to have Lundar tie the game with a powerplay goal.  The second period saw no scoring, and the game headed to the 3rd knotted at 1-1.  Lundar scored twice in the first 3 minutes of the 3rd, and then added a powerplay goal with 7:30 to go, to defeat the Storm by a 4-1 score.

The Falcons’ were led by Aldyn Gray, who scored a goal and added an assist.  Landen Gray, Michael Shannon & Storm Swan all scored single goals.  Randy Quick made 39 saves on 40 shots in the game for the win.

Tinoshi Mizushima scored the lone goal for the Storm, and tallied 3 over the weekend’s games.  Luke Penner made 35 saves on 39 shots in the game.

 

In other action Saturday night, the North Winnipeg Satelites played a weekend set in Norway House.  Norway House opened the scoring just past the midway point of the first with a powerplay goal.  They added a second a few minutes later going up 2-0 before the Satelites got on the board with a goal of their own.  The second period saw the Satelites tie the game early in the period, however the North Stars scored just seconds later to regain the lead.  The rest of the period was a see-saw battle, and the at the end of two periods, it was 5-4 Norway House.  The 3rd period saw the North Stars score the lone goal, and hold on for a 6-4 upset win.

Austin Ross scored once and added an assist to pace the North Stars.  Mitchell Muskego, Kenley Monias, Sam McKay Jr, Braeden Boschman & Glen Paupanekis all added single goals.  Sean Bradburn made 47 saves in the game on 51 shots to record the win.

Keilan Mott, Mathew Carrey, Jason Campbell & Kyle Grand all scored single goals for North Winnipeg.  Marc Hildebrand made 34 saves in the game.

 

Sunday’s schedule had 3 games on the docket.  North Winnipeg and Norway House completed their weekend matchup.  The North Stars again took the early lead in this game.  The Satelites tied it, but the North Stars added two powerplay goals to take a 3-1 lead.  Norway House added to that lead with the lone 2nd period goal, another powerplay goal and held a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes.  In the 3rd, the Satelites poured on the offence, and scored 3 times, including the tying goal with 1:17 to go, while on the powerplay, and forced overtime.  In OT, with the North Stars who found the net to record the win and the weekend series sweep.

Glen Paupanekis scored twice, including the OT winner and recorded 2 assists to lead the North Stars.  Braeden Boschman added 2 goals and Sam McKay Jr chipped in with 2 helpers.  Sean Bradburn was strong in goal again, making 56 saves on 60 shots for the OT win.

North Winnipeg was led by Kyle Collins who scored once and added an assist.  Mathew Carrey chipped in with 2 assists.  Marc Hildebrand made 30 saves on 35 shots in the game.

 

Further South, the St. Malo Warriors paid a visit to the Fisher River to play the Hawks.  This game was all St. Malo, as they scored twice in the first period, added 3 more in the 2nd period, and then romped to 6 goals in the 3rd, hammering the Hawks 11-0.

Tyler Kemball finished with 2 goals and 2 assists for the Warriors, while Bryden Johnson scored a hat trick.  Jared Magne added a goal and 2 assists.  Jessi Freund & Triston Eastman eac scored twice, while Brandon Strattor, Brett Keith & Kyle Fortin all had 2 assists.  Jordan Taylor stopped all 26 shots he faced in the game to record the shutout win.

While no one was able to find the back of the net for the Hawks, Dakota Johnson played a strong game in goal for Fisher River, making a remarkable 70 saves on 81 shots.

 

The final game of the week, pitted the Peguis Juniors against the Selkirk Fishermen.  Selkirk scored the opening goal, just past the midway point, however the Juniors countered with a tying goal just seconds later, and the first ended 1-1.   Selkirk scored 4 straight goals, including 2 on the powerplay in the 2nd to jump out to a 5-1 lead.  Peguis got one back, but the period ended with a 5-2 Fish advantage.  The final period saw the Fishermen add 3 more to the total, including 2 more on the powerplay and they cruised to an 8-2 win.

Brandon Paradoski led the Fishermen with 3 assists.  Cory Balcaen scored twice, while Jeremy Pachkowsky, Scott Thomas, Griffin Steeves & Karl Fey each had a goal and an assist.  Cale McBride added 2 assists.  Bretton Fewchuk made 18 saves on 20 shots for the win.

Tyrell Armstrong scored a goal and added an assist for the Juniors, while Jesse Flett scored a single goal.  Keifer Tacan made 48 saves on 56 shots in goal for Peguis.

 

The final week of action in January for the KJHL kicks off on Wednesday night, as the North Winnipeg Satelites head to Fisher River to battle the Hawks.  Thursday night sees the Norway House North Stars head to OCN to lock horns with the Storm.  Friday night has the North Stars on the road for a rescheduled game against the Peguis Juniors,  while the Selkirk Fishermen head to Lundar to play the Falcons and Fisher River pays a visit to St. Malo to play the Warriors.  Saturday evening has 8 of the nine teams in action.  The North Stars continue their road trip with another rescheduled game, this time against the Fisher River Hawks.  Lundar plays in Arborg against the Ice Dawgs, while St. Malo sees action in Selkirk against the league-leading Fishermen.   Peguis will be in OCN both Saturday and for the lone game Sunday to play the Storm, which was rescheduled from before Christmas.  Be sure to check out the action, as the race for playoff positioning heats up!
