The third week of KJHL action kicked off on Tuesday evening, as the Fisher River Hawks visited the North Winnipeg Satelites. The Hawks were looking for their first win, while the Satelites were looking to keep their perfect record intact.
The Hawks opened the scoring just over 5 minutes in, and from there, it was all Satelites. The Satelites scored 4 unanswered goals in the first and added 3 more in the second, to hold a 7-1 lead heading to the 3rd period. North Winnipeg scored twice in the first 5 minutes of the third and held a 9-1 advantage, eventually cruising to an 11-2 win.
Sean Murray led all Satelites’ scorers with 2 goals and 2 assists. Kyle Collins & Christian Sanderson added 2 goals of each. Kevin Haines, Grayson Schmidt & David Friesen each chipped in with a goal and an assist, while Matthew Carrey added 2 assists.
Keaton Klassen made 22 saves in the game to record the win.
Jared Thickfoot & Darryl Thaddeus had the Fisher River goals. Both Tyrone Morrisseau & Ryan Bruyere tended goal in the game for the Hawks, with Morrisseau suffering the loss, surrending 7 goals in the first 40 minutes, while Bruyere allowed 4 goals over the final 20 minutes.
With no games for a few days, the KJHL got back going on Friday night with a single game – seeing the Arborg Ice Dawgs visiting the Lundar Falcons in what was a home and home weekend series. This was a hard fought battle, as the Ice Dawgs opened the scoring in the first, only to see the Falcons tie in in the final two minutes. The second period saw the Ice Dawgs come out flying, and score twice in the first 1:05, to hold a 3-1 lead. Lundar cut the lead to 3-2 with a powerplay goal, but then gave up a goal with just 2 seconds remaining in the period, and went to the dressing room down 4-2. Arborg scored the lone 3rd period goal, and held on for the 5-2 win.
The Ice Dawgs were led by Travis Kilbrei with 2 goals, while Cal Finnson & Talon Kelly each added 2 assists. Jon Narverud made 40 saves on 42 shots to claim the win.
Lundar got single goals from Cody Paul & Troy Kaartinen. Andrew Smith made 35 saves in the loss.
On Saturday, the North Winnipeg Satelites put their undefeated record on the line with their first visit to Peguis. The Satelites opened the scoring just over 6 minutes in with a powerplay marker. They scored 5 minutes later and held a 2-0 first period lead. The second period remained scoreless until the Satelites increased their lead to 3-0 with the only goal of the period. Then, just 18 seconds in the third, North Winnipeg made it 4-0. Peguis finally got on the board at the 10 minute mark, only to have that goal answered back a few minutes later. The Satelites held a 5-1 lead with just under 7 minutes to play. But the Juniors were done, scoring 3 times in the final 3:27, but it was too little, too late. The North Winnipeg Satelites held on to make this one a 5-4 win.
Sean Murray led the Satelites with 2 goals & an assist, while Kyle Collins added 3 assists. Matthew Carrey also added a goal and an assist in the game. Marc Hildebrand made 40 saves on 44 shots to record the win.
Brennan Cochrane & Darryl Flett paced the Juniors with a goal and an assist each. Waylon Neault chipped in with 2 assists. Keifer Tacan suffered the loss, eventually giving way to Jarrod Smith to close out the game.
Also on Saturday, the St. Malo Warriors travelled north to OCN for a weekend match up with the Storm. The Storm were looking to keep their unbeaten record alive, and stay on pace with the Satelites. The Warriors opened the scoring in the first period, only to have OCN tie it back up. The second period had OCN score twice, including a powerplay marker to hold a 3-1 lead. St. Malo cut that lead to 3-2 with a late goal themselves. In the 3rd, the Warriors struck first, and tied the game up, but OCN answered back with 2 goals, to hold on for a 5-3 win in front of their home crowd.
The Storm got 2 goals each from Harold Linklater & Isaiah Francis. Mitchell Tilley added a goal and an assist, and Justice Genaille added 2 helpers. Luke Penner made 23 saves on 26 shots for the win.
The Warriors were led by Bryden Johnson with 2 assists, while Jessi Freund, Jared Hunter & Brandon Stratton scored lone markers. Jordan Taylor allowed 5 goals on 32 shots in the loss.
Sunday’s KJHL schedule had two games on. St. Malo and OCN continued their weekend set in OCN. OCN opened the scoring in the first with two goals in the first 5 minutes of play. However, St. Malo answered back with two of their own, and the game was tied 2-2 after one. The second period saw St. Malo take the lead, only to have the Storm reply with two goals of their own to go ahead in the game, including a penalty shot goal. The Warriors got one of their own, while OCN answered back. At the end of 40 minutes, the Storm led a close game 5-4. St. Malo evened the game again just under 4 minutes into the 3rd. OCN once again took the lead later in the period, while St. Malo tied it back up for good on the powerplay late in the 3rd. The game went to overtime, where nothing was settled, and then to a shootout. In the shootout, St. Malo scored once, while OCN found the twine twice, to keep their unbeaten streak alive.
The Storm were led by Maxwell Shoo with 2 goals, and a shootout marker. Tinoshi Mizushima also had a goal and an assist, along with a shootout goal. Justice Genaille, Bryson Constant, & Mitch Tilley also scored single goals for the Storm. Luke Penner made 27 saves to record the shootout win.
On the St. Malo side, Jared Magne recorded a hat trick with 3 goals & Tristan Eastman scored twice. Jared Hunter scored a lone goal. Jeff Froese chipped in with 4 helpers. Jordan Taylor made 30 saves in the game, recording the shootout loss.
The final game of the weekend was the second of the home and home between Arborg and Lundar. Arborg opened the scoring late in the first period, and held a 1-0 lead at the end of one. The teams played a scoreless second until both Arborg & Lundar scored 21 seconds apart. Arborg then added 3 more goals over the final 9 minutes of the period, with Lundar answering in the dying seconds. The Ice Dawgs held a 5-2 advantage heading to the final frame. The 3rd period saw the teams trade 2 goals back and forth, with Arborg coming out ahead 7-4.
The Ice Dawgs saw multiple players each score a goal and add an assist in the game: Cal Finnson, Deric Gulay, Travis Kilbrei, Jesse Chupka & Jayde Barkman. Byron Gard added 2 assists in the game. Travis Schalk turned aside 42 shots to record the win.
Landen Gray led all Lundar scorers with a goal and an assist. Braden Lussier, Troy Kaartinen & Blake Klippenstein each scored single goals. Randy Quick made 55 saves in the game.
Next week’s KJHL action begins on Tuesday with two games – the Fisher River Hawks are in Peguis for a matchup with the Juniors & the Arborg Ice Dawgs try to knock-off the North Winnipeg Satelites. Action continues as Northern Manitoba rivals Norway House North Stars and OCN Storm lockup at Gordon Lathlin Memorial Centre in OCN. Halloween night sees a lone game as the Selkirk Fishermen travel west for a game vs Lundar. Saturday’s schedule has 6 of the league’s teams playing, with Selkirk visiting St. Malo, the Arborg Ice Dawgs in Fisher River for a game vs the Hawks & Norway House travelling South for a weekend match up with the Lundar Falcons.
